HAND IN HAND WE REACH OUR GOALS

HAHANDND IN HAND, WE REACH OUR GOALS
Raise A Leader, Not a Bully
“My kid wouldn’t do that” is what every parent would like to say. But what if your child really is a bully? “Bullying is not about anger or conflict” says Barbara Colorosa, author of The Bully, the Bullied and the Bystander. “It’s about contempt.”
Here’s her advice on how parents can prevent their children from bullyingor stop them if they already are:
Watch you own behavior. Contempt is learned, so be careful how you treat others, be it a store clerk or the cable guy. Sexist or racist jokes also send the wrong message.
Nurture empathy and sympathy. Make sure kids are aware that their behavior has consequences and that they respond appropriately to people’s emotions, rather than getting pleasure out of distress.
Monitor TV, video games and music. “They don’t necessarily cause mean behavior, but they can create a culture of mean,” Colorosa says. Don’t forbid media, but discuss with your kids what they are doing so they can learn what is right and what is wrong.
Teach Leadership Skills. “Bullies have phenomenal leadership skills but don’t know how to be a ‘friend’ because their peers don’t usually trust them, Colorosa says. Teach them to use their leadership talent in positive outlets, such as volunteering at a soup kitchen or senior citizen’s home.
Engage them in energizing activities. “Your child can attack a rock-climbing wall with the same fervor he once used to attack his brother,” Colorosa says.

McTeacher Night NOVEMBER 3 ![]()
The event will take place from 4:00 8:00 p.m. at the McDonald’s Restaurant at 3340 South 10th. (Hwy. 2 & So. 10th) 20% of the proceeds from that night will come back to Prescott School for our students. Prescott Staff will be there to greet and serve you. Put it on your calendar. H1N1 Flu
There are several precautions you can teach your children to reduce their chance of contracting H1N1 flu.
Below are useful websites where you can access up-to-date information about H1N1 flu and pandemic flu planning:

RECYCYEBE A GOOD CITIZEN
America Recycles Day is November 15th. This day is the only national event to promote recycling and the purchase of recycled content products. As a school, we will participate in a pledge drive competition. The school with the most overall pledges will win a 48inch park bench made from recycled plastic that has a retail value of $450. And $250 will go to each of the high schools, middle schools and elementary schools with the most pledges (per student based on enrollment).
As a family, you can go to www.lincoln.ne.gov
for ideas and to take the pledge! Our students will take the pledge in computer class and as an act of good citizenship; we will have each classroom be responsible for their paper recycling. Make a recycling plan at home and have your child share that at school as his/her way of being a good citizen.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
The Book Fair in October was also very
successful. Thanks to Ms. Ebeler and several teachers and parents we sold almost a $1000 worth of books. The profits will go toward a free book for every child in May as

Our next Book Fair will be the end of February and the first of March during our second Parent Teacher Conferences. This Book Fair will be “Buy One Get One Free”.
